New Home & New Procedures

Monday evenings 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Where: Archwood Community Centre, 565 Guilbault Street, upstairs on the second floor.

The drop-in fee for guests is still $10.

What to do:

Come in the front door. If you require a donkey and /or a board and /or a taboret table, then before you proceed upstairs, go into the skate change area (the ‘skate shack’) to your right, and secure the supplies you need. Come back to the front elevator and come up. Then left, and down the hall to the big meeting room. We have most of our easels up there already, so for easel users, help yourself.

Because a new beginning like this is a prime opportunity to start with good habits, we have a few new house rules:

  1.  If you are using messy media such as chalk or paint, please cover the floor underneath your workspace with a sheet or some plastic. We will try to have some construction plastic roll on hand. Members are to clean up after themselves; let’s stay in the Community Centre’s good books. A broom & dustpan and mop & pail will be available.
  2. Downstairs (main) doors will be locked at 7:00. Members who are late should ring the doorbell & one of us will come down and let you in.
  3. In winter, we are to remove dirty footwear before entering the room. Winter footwear can go on the boot trays in the hall just outside the room. Members who don’t want to walk in their funky socks should bring indoor footwear, although socks are of course fine too.
  4. At the end of the evening, put supplies away neatly, please ensure you’ve cleaned up after yourself, help out if you can, and let’s all be safe going out and driving home.

We’re Moving!

After much careful consideration, scouting around the city, and weighing the various factors involved in our Club’s activities, the Executive and I have made the decision to relocate.

Keep reading for the details, as I think you’ll be pleased.

We are moving Sketching nights to Mondays, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Archwood Community Club at 565 Guilbault Street.  Our first evening together there will be on Monday 18 September.

There are many advantages to this move. Here are just a few:

1. The space: The facility is clean and very well maintained. We’ll be sketching in a spacious well-lit room on the second floor of the Community Club. There is enough space for lots of members and drop-in artists to gather around a model, with possibilities of sketching in rows of seated and standing artists as we have been doing, or who knows — even sketching ‘in the round’ for a figure drawing night.

2. Accessibility: There is an elevator. We anticipate that meeting in a space that is accessible to all, regardless of physical ability or mobility limitations, will draw more of our members who have desperately wanted for years to come out regularly, but simply couldn’t do the stairs, or were worried about emergency evacuation if the need were to arise. We’ll have no more such exclusion. All should feel welcome.

3. Parking and Safety: The Archwood has a large gravel parking lot, with more than enough spaces for everyone to park nice and close to the doors. We can lock the front door when we are settled in for the evening; latecomers can ring the door buzzer and someone can go down and let them in. And if it seems like a good idea, in wintertime let’s walk each other out to our vehicles at the end of the evening and make sure everyone is on their way home safely before the last one of us leaves.

There’s more that I could tell you, but for now I’ll keep it short. We will need volunteers to help move our stuff — I am hoping to move most of it Sunday afternoon the 10th of September — so if you can lend a hand, & if you have a van or truck!! — please get in touch with me. Be the first to tour our new home! And if you are available on a weekday, I’m sure we could make arrangements to use your help even on a day I myself can’t be there.

So here’s to a great season and a fresh start. Watch for a newsletter soon, with more details — and more volunteer jobs we need to fill!

AGM News Summary

by Thomas Steur, Club President

Thank you to all who came out for our Annual General Meeting yesterday 16 April at the FAC. Thanks to all who volunteered for various tasks, let their names stand for nominations, and especially thanks to Angela for the coffee and goodies.

For those who missed it, a quick recap:

All agreed the Annual Juried Exhibition this year at CCFM is a great success. It is on until 19 May. Tell your friends and aunts and uncles.

We had a quorum at the meeting, approximately half the membership. Discussion took place re annual fees. Given the cost of models and a not-yet-determined-but-very-likely-coming-down-the-pike rent increase, a motion was put forth, and carried, to raise membership dues for 2024 and on, to $85.00 a year. Drop-in fee remains at $10. We think these prices are still a bargain for what members get for their buck.

To increase capacity in order to meet the demand (!) we are adding a weekly drop-in drawing session at the Forum Art Centre on Thursday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. from 20 April to 8 June. Cost to cover the models is $10, for both members and non-members.

In addition to those I expressed my gratitude to for their duties this past year, I also want to shout out thanks to a gentleman who could not be at the AGM in person, but nonetheless also deserves a public acknowledgement: George Tanner — thank you for maintaining our Club’s Web site and web hosting and email account. The web site is our everyday public face, and for those who haven’t spent an evening perusing the magnificent GALLERIES on there at https://winnipegsketchclub.ca/?page_id=200, I highly recommend you treat yourself to a long look!

Anyway, in a nutshell, the Club’s Executive remains essentially unchanged for 2023-24. Thanks to Nicholas Burns for volunteering to join the Exhibition Committee. Thanks to Sharon Routley and Cindy Rublee for offering their expertise on a possible review of the Club’s financial position. Thanks to Curtis Cucmak for volunteering to assist with the Social Committee.

Curtis also would like everyone to know about his new Facebook page! Check out Curt’s Gothic Art, which showcases horror and macabre paintings: https://www.facebook.com/people/Curt-s-Gothic-Art/100057252557793/.
